The challenge brief that our team chose to work on was the ‘Share a Coke’ packaging presented by Coca Cola. The project scope was to develop a concept to physically connect two mini cans (7.5 oz) for refrigerated convenience store merchandising. The ideas that we had in the beginning were three-fold. The first one was that the customer should be able to open the package by breaking it in half and the second one was to have a solid box covering the cans with no exposure. The third and most basic requirement was to make sure our packaging was sustainable; the customers should be left with the least amount of ‘recyclable waste’. We designed a package with a zipper like opening down the middle and a tab that would help rip open the package before breaking it into two compartments. We realized that this idea would not work as the zipper design was a failure. When redesigning the splitting the box into half objective, there was an idea to have evenly spaced-out cuts through the middle that would enable an easy tear of the package into half. After the creation of another prototype, we realized that there would be an issue of where the customer would start ripping the package. Then we added a perforation in the middle that would be pushed down and would give the customer the starting slit that would ensure that there is ‘crisp’ pull apart of the package where the customer looks cool and shares a coke with their friend. After completing the structural design, we started working on our graphics. The team wanted something that is similar to the current Coca Cola mini package while also emphasizing on the ‘Share a Coke’ aspect. The idea was to keep it minimal since the package is already compact, having a lot of things on the package would ruin it. With our ideas and vision in mind we looked for inspiration online, going through various packages from Coca Cola and found some interesting and attractive looking ideas that could be redesigned and fit into our graphic design. One of the most important aspects of the project was to share a coke with someone so we decided to create the design of the two cans in the middle labeled ‘You’ and ‘Me’. Similarly, we redesigned the ‘mini’ by making the ‘i’ in it to represent two people sharing a coke can. To create our designs, we used ArtiosCAD, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
