Going in its 4th year, the annual student package design competition was created as a forum to highlight the skills and talents of tomorrow’s design professionals.

The panel of judges will jury all submissions, with winners receiving cash prizes ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Winners will be announced on May 2, at NEXTPACK 2013. This summit on the “Future of Packaging” is hosted by the Institute of Packaging Professionals Southeastern Chapter and is held at The Coca-Cola Company headquarters in Atlanta, GA. The summit features leading industry experts on technology, research, design, innovation and trends.

The competition is the link between students and packaging professionals from some of the finest design firms and sponsoring corporations in the Southeast. Every competition participant receives complimentary admission to the NEXTPACK 2013. The top ten finalists will be invited to show their designs in the exhibition area. The three winning teams will present their ideas as part of the summit program. All entries will be featured on the competition website www.48hrrepack.com.

In addition, two members of each winning team will be invited to present their design idea at the 2013 Walmart Sustainable Packaging Expo, May 8-9.

“The 48 Hour Re-Pack Competition is a great way to showcase future packaging professionals,” says Chet Rutledge of Walmart. “This competition will challenge designers to blend function and form, sustainability and material optimization all in a short time frame with a hard deadline.”

Platinum sponsors of the 2013 “48 Hour Re-Pack” include: The Coca-Cola Company, MWV, Unisource Worldwide, Printpack, Southern Graphic Systems, Bemis, Graphic Packaging, Plastic Technologies, IoPP SE and IBPA.

The competition will kick off on February 22, 7 pm and end 48 hours later, on February, 24, 2013. The registration deadline is February 20th, 2013.

You find the login and password to this blog in the email with the competition challenge that we will send to you on February 24th.

Tomorrow, February, 24, 2012 at 7 pm EST we will send out the 2012 challenge by email to the email address you have registered with.
You then have exactly 48 hours to send back your design ideas.
Read carefully all the instructions that will be included in the email, a few things have slightly changed from past competitions.

Make sure you have this email address saved in your contacts, so we don’t end up in your spam folder.

Also, please look out for emails after the competition!

We will send out more details on the IoPP NEXTPACK Summit on April 10th 2012. There we will announce the top ten finalists and of course the 2012 winners! Different this year: We offer the top ten teams to exhibit their packaging ideas in person right next to all the other exhibitors during the Summit! This is a great way to showcase your idea, to network and speak with packaging professionals from many different companies.

Of course, like in previous years, all students who submitted a design idea receive complimentary admission to the NEXTPACK Summit.
All other students are invited as well at the reduced rate of $25.

Do you have an interest in how products are packaged and designed?  The Southeastern Chapter of the Institute of Packaging Professionals would like to invite you and your students to join us for the 3^rd annual “48 Hour Re-Pack” Student Packaging Design Competition.

The 48-hour competition will start at 7 pm on Friday, February 24^th 2012. All submissions must be received by 7 pm on Sunday, February 26^th, 2012. The top ten winners will be announced on April 10th during the 2012 NEXTPACK Packaging Summit at Coca-Cola’s World Headquarters in Atlanta. Students will not only have the chance to win award money, they will have the chance to present their work to packaging and design professionals of major companies in the Southeast.

All participating students will receive a complementary pass to the NEXTPACK Summit on April 10, where the results are announced.  This Summit is a great educational opportunity with guest speakers from Kraft, Method, and Brand Packaging Magazine.  This is also an opportunity for students to network with brand, packaging, and design professionals with familiar companies around the region.  All non-participating students will be admitted at a reduced rate of $25, and admission includes a copy of Eric Ryan’s book “The Method Method”.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2012?

In addition to the award money and recognition, the top ten teams will have the exciting opportunity to exhibit their design concepts in person right next to all other exhibiting sponsors! We are very excited to offer you another opportunity to form great relationships.

We also updated the competition website www.48hrrepack.com. The new website will give us the opportunity to upload all design entries directly–so no entries end up “in the drawer”. (Please note that additional images need to be provided by participating teams as listed in the instructions).

Our new blog gives you the opportunity to talk about your experience during the competition and keep you updated on other IoPP events in the area.

Thanks to our sponsors, we are able to provide great educational awards for the upcoming competition!  This award money granted will be $2,000 for first, $1,000 for second and $500 for third place.

-          123 students participated in the first event; students were allowed to work alone or form teams

-          29 individual entries were submitted and reviewed
